Exposition Art Gallery
West Adams, CA
The conversion of this industrial warehouse into a
contemporary art gallery presented an opportunity to honor the building’s raw
heritage while creating a flexible space for art. A large, perforated metal
screen defines the street front, providing security while engaging the public
realm with shifting degrees of transparency throughout the day. A narrow
courtyard greets the visitor as an outdoor threshold between city and gallery,
controlling the procession from street to art.
The existing structure sets the tone throughout the project,
with exposed trusses and metal decking alongside clerestory windows that remain
critical to flooding the gallery with natural light. A compressed reception
area welcomes guests into a transition space connecting the main gallery and a
private meeting room along the front façade. Blackened steel display shelving
anchors the program within the gallery as visitors pass through to a curated
exterior courtyard, where a single olive tree offers a moment of stillness for
events and gatherings.
